Biarritz, the cradle of European surfing

Did you know that Biarritz – to be precise the Côte des Basques beach – is where people first started surfing in Europe in 1956? Scriptwriter, writer and surfer Peter Viertel, and Georges Hennebutte — inventor of the leash — were the first to surf on the coast. The first surfing club was founded three years later. Nowadays Biarritz Pays Basque is one of the best destination for a surf trip on the Atlantic coast… Check out our local guide to the best beaches to surf in the south west of France !

There are plenty of great surfing waves all along the Basque coast! The many beaches offer a variety of conditions and weather suitable for longboarders and shortboarders. Beginners and experts alike will find something suitable. From Anglet to Bidart, along with the legendary wave of Belharra, you are spoilt for choice!

Surfing and lifestyle

After your session, enjoy cocktails looking out over the sea. In high season, charming huts like the Kostaldea or EtxolaBibi, open up in magical sites on the beach. When the Atlantic ocean is calm, there are no fewer than 5 skateparks along the coast and in summer there are plenty of surf-related festivals and events. Check out the programme!
