Biarritz, the cradle of European surfing
Did you know that Biarritz – to be precise the Côte des Basques beach – is where people first started surfing in Europe in 1956? Scriptwriter, writer and surfer Peter Viertel, and Georges Hennebutte — inventor of the leash — were the first to surf on the coast. The first surfing club was founded three years later.
