DISCONNECTED HOLIDAYS AT IRATY IN THE BASQUE MOUNTAINS

Here’s a location in the Basque Country that’s out of time and is guaranteed to appeal to everyone; the chalets of Iraty and its huge beechwood forest. Young and old, families, couples or friends, Iraty is a winner with everyone, no matter the season. Take a break in this unique spot which will reconnect you with real life.

There’s so much to do in Iraty! If you need to disconnect and recharge your batteries, this is the place to come. Stay in a village of 40 wooden chalets on the edge of the Europe’s largest beechwood forest. At nearly 1,500m altitude, you’re at the peak of the Basque mountains. There’s no Wi-Fi here, so leave your laptop, screens and car behind and immerse yourself fully in the heart of nature.

In your charming, fully-equipped wooden chalet, in the shelter of the trees and isolated from the other chalets, experience your very own fairy-tale! A total change of scene awaits you in a woodland filled with numerous species of birds and other wildlife. A magical break in the great outdoors, where you can escape everyday life and discover nature off the beaten track.

There is plenty to do in Iraty, in summer or winter, and from May to November you can encounter sheep-herders and their flocks in these vast open spaces. Spring and summer are the seasons for walking and hiking along the numerous walking trails, for climbing to the summit of Pic d’Orhy, horse-riding or freshwater fishing. Sports lovers can choose from trekking on horseback or with donkeys, or electric mountain bike rental. In this spectacular environment, autumn promises woodpigeon hunting, mushroom picking and bird-watching as Europe’s migratory birds fly over the Organbidexka Pass. When Iraty is under the winter snow, it’s time for cross-country skiing and snow-shoes!

A host of adventures and activities await you, which you can relive in the evenings in the Iraty restaurant, with its welcoming fireplace and quality local cuisine, before heading back through the woods on foot to your cosy chalet for a peaceful night’s sleep. The ideal family holiday to get away from it all; even the kids will happily give up their screens to sleep under the starry skies in this wonderful setting. That’s the magic of Iraty!
